Clean Sweep for Wight, Decker Shocks in Sportsman in DTD TV Showdown in the Sunshine State Finale

LAKE CITY, FL — They say lightning never strikes twice, but at All-Tech Raceway during the first-ever Dirt Track Digest TV Showdown in the Sunshine State, Larry Wight struck three times, completing the sweep on the final night for his third win in a row.

Wight dominated the finale, leading every lap after drawing the pole position at the start for another $5,000 paycheck.

“I could have done with a little less excitement last night,” said Wight. “This is awesome. We didn’t have to work as hard here tonight.”

Wight bolted to the lead at the start of the 40-lap feature, with Darren Smith and Jimmy Phelps racing hard for the runner-up position. Smith held it early, but it came with heavy pressure from Phelps and eventually Matt Sheppard.

Traffic became a factor for Wight for the first time on lap eight. At the same time, Sheppard was making moves, and two laps later he drove into the runner-up position.

The sole caution came on lap 14 when a pair of cars got together off turn two. On the green, Wight jumped out in front once again.

“We had that one restart and I had Matt alongside me,” said Wight. “I really had no idea what the track was doing. I was kind of running my bottom line down there. The bottom just had so much traction for so long.”

Sheppard dropped back on the restart, with Phelps getting back by for second. Wight raced away as Phelps and Sheppard waged war for second. Sheppard eventually got around Phelps as the race reached halfway.

Wight was back in traffic as the race moved toward its conclusion. Sheppard remained in the second spot, with Tanner VanDoren beginning his charge to the front. VanDoren was fastest in his time trial session and began showing speed with 10 laps to go.

VanDoren took third on lap 35 from Rick Laubach, then drove by Sheppard with three laps to go for second.

In the end, VanDoren ran out of time as Wight claimed win number three of the week.

VanDoren was all smiles after racing his way from 10th to second at the checkered flag.

“On the start there, I just got stuck on the top,” said VanDoren. “I fell back to 15th or 16th and was going nowhere. One lap I finally decided to get off the bottom to stop following people. I went to the top in three and four and hit the wall, and it gave me a run off. I figured if I could do that every lap, I’d be good.”

Sheppard completed his week with another podium, capping it off with a third-place finish.

“Really solid week for this entire team,” said Sheppard. “I’m really proud of everybody. We kind of had a whole reset this winter, and to come down here strong with three podium finishes—this was a very tough field. The best of the best were here. We were good. We were respectable every night.”

Rick Laubach had his best run of the week fourth with Phelps hanging on to finish in fifth.

Avery Decker made the most of his fourth starting position in the 20-lap Sportsman feature, bolting to the lead on the opening lap and leading every circuit for the triumph.

Decker set a torrid pace in the early going as Richard Murtaugh III, who started sixth, and Brian Calabrese climbed their way through the field.

Just as the race reached halfway, the only caution of the main event was thrown for a multi-car tangle in turns one and two.

On the restart, Decker was forced to deal with Friday night winner Murtaugh. Murtaugh got to him but just couldn’t make the pass. As he tried, Calabrese made the move for second with two laps left.

Decker crossed the line first, with Calabrese scoring another podium in second. Murtaugh finished third, followed by Derrick McGrew Jr. in fourth. Karl Comfort completed the top five.

It was announced at the drivers’ meeting on Saturday night that the DTD TV Showdown in the Sunshine State will return to All-Tech Raceway in 2027.
