LAKE CITY, FL – Back on track.
It took until Night No. 3 of the ‘Sunshine Swing’ at All-Tech Raceway, but Savannah, N.Y.’s Matt Sheppard returned to Victory Lane on Friday night, taking home $6,000 after the 40-lap event.
Sheppard started the event second and led the entire distance on a hammer-down surface at the Wendell Durrance-owned facility.
The win for Sheppard was the 51st of his career with the series and first since Sept. 28, 2024, at N.Y.’s Utica-Rome Speedway.
“We had different track conditions tonight, that’s for sure,” Sheppard said. “It finally blew off there in (turns) three and four. We finally made the right decisions and had a pretty good racecar all night.
“The car drove really good for me. We tried to get up front and stay out of the wall.”
Sheppard first had to outduel pole starter Tim Fuller – and later Larry Wight – en route to his fifth series win in the Sunshine State.
Wight, of Phoenix, N.Y., earned a week-best second in the F.X. Caprara Car Companies No. 99L.
“After the last year we’ve had, this is about as close to a win as we can get,” Wight said. “To be up on the podium, it’s huge leaps and bounds for this team.”
Fuller, of Edwards, N.Y., completed the podium, followed by Binghamton, N.Y.’s Darren Smith and Schnecksville, Pa.’s Tanner Van Doren.
Finishing sixth through 10th, respectively, were Stewart Friesen of Sprakers, N.Y., rebounding from an opening-lap skirmish in turn one; Bobby Hackel of East Greenbush, N.Y., surging forward from 25th on the grid; 15th-starter Tyler Siri of Horseheads, N.Y.; Danny Bouc of Horseheads, N.Y., up from 16th; and Chris Curtis of East Canaan, Conn.
Van Doren was the ATL Hot Lap Hero with a lap of 19.815 seconds.
Heat winners were Erick Rudolph, Sheppard, Danny Creeden and Van Doren.
Rick Laubach and Alex Payne topped the B-Mains.
New Jersey teenager Paulie Hartwig III drove to his first win of the week in the 30-lap STSS Sportsman main. The triumph was worth $2,000 to his family fielded team.
Hartwig, the outside pole starter for the 30-lap main, outgunned Donovan Lussier on a lap-20 restart and thwarted the attempts by Payton Talbot to pick up the win, his second with the series and first since July 2013 at the now-closed Bloomsburg (Pa.) Fairgrounds.
Talbot fell just shy of a victory in second, with Quebec’s Lussier – after an engine change – finishing third. Boyertown, Pa.’s Logan Watt and Connecticut’s Conor Crane, who started 16th, completed the front five.
The Fastline Performance Hot lap Hero was Nick Zielinski at 21.782 seconds.
Lussier, Todd English and Tim Clemons were Sportsman heat winners. Blaine Klinger topped the B-Main.
Tonight (Saturday) the STSS ‘Sunshine Swing’ reaches its conclusion with a 50-lap, $7,500-to-win STSS Modified event and another 30-lap, $2,000-to-win Sportsman program. Crown Vics complete the tripleheader.
